Letter from the Editors
Often, every school year starts off as though it were a repeat of the last. We tread the same hallways, seek the same comforts, and carve homes in our mundane routines. But autumn falls upon us and a storm gathers bluster just as we think we've figured it out. Soon, we are whisked into countless new experiences—new teachers, new classes, new friends—and find ourselves rushing forward into the blinding light of our futures.
But what appears to be a white haze on the horizon only turns out to be winter. Though we Californians are spared from truly brutal weather, we witness the days shortening, friends retreating— signs that our lives are privy to forces vastly beyond us. As freshmen contend with their burgeoning identities and seniors figure out how to pack theirs within word count, the thought inevitably appears: How much of this was ever in our control?
Volume 9: Numen invites you to pinpoint this complex and divine presence-in our par-entage, our math homework, our fleeting rendezvous. We shape each moment of our lives, but we are also guided by an instinct too immense to be embodied, yet too intimate to deny influence.
With our work, we navigate that spiritual space. Volume 9: Numen is a testament to art's acuity— maybe we can't contain the divine, but we can trace the dappled shapes of their shadows, searching for their answers.
